Walk the walk — Scripture Reflection #052

James 2:15-16 (New Living Translation)

15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”–but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?

An integral step in our walk with Christ is doing good to those around us– especially to those who share our faith in Christ Jesus. James, the brother of Jesus, likely had a front-seat view of Jesus’ ministry and understood better than most that one must do more than talk the talk.

In his letter to the scattered Jewish believers, James emphasized the importance of a life of faith accompanied by good works, by actions. Simply praying for others in need and wishing them well is not a life of good deeds. We must honestly reflect on our lives to see that we are truly doing God’s will and helping those who may lack something that we have. After all, everything we have is a gift from God meant to be used to bless others.

The Point: We must do more than talk the talk; we must also walk the walk.

Colorful foam letters spell "Do Good" against a plain white background. The words, in bright green, purple, and blue. This represents how we must do more than talk the talk; we must walk the walk by doing good.
