Don’t forget to take the chicken out of the freezer — Scripture Reflection #056

1 John 2:28 (New Living Translation)

28 And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so that when He returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from Him in shame.

When you were young, did your mom or dad ever leave the house to run some errands and give you a task to complete before they came home? For me, my mom would ask my siblings and me to clean the kitchen or take the chicken out of the freezer to thaw. I can remember countless times when we were playing video games or watching TV, and then hearing the garage door open and realizing that we completely forgot to do what mom had asked! We would walk in shame to meet her at the door and tell her we did not do what she wanted done.

Our spiritual journey with Christ requires us to walk in fellowship with God daily. This means spending time with Him in prayer and reading His Word. This also means we must do the things that he has required of us–oftentimes found in His Word. When we succeed in fellowshipping with Christ in these ways, we will be ready for His return, and not be caught in shame like my siblings and I when we did not do what our mom asked of us.

The Point: We are meant to walk in fellowship with God daily. When we do, and when He does return, we will joyfully and confidently welcome Him back with praise and assurance.

Two hands hold a tray of chicken in front of an open refrigerator. Inside, there's lettuce, tomatoes, and bell peppers. The setting is clean and organized. This represents how we must do what God asks of us, just like the story in my post, so that we will not be ashamed at His return.
