Fear of God — Scripture Reflection #086
Exodus 20:18 (New Living Translation)
18 When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
Fear can be either healthy or unhealthy. It is healthy when it steers us away from danger or inappropriate actions for fear of the consequences. Fear is unhealthy when it is not based on reality — when it is misplaced or constant or misaligned with God’s will.
The fear of God, as seen in this passage, can be thought of as a deep respect and reverence for God. The Israelites are found trembling with fear before the great and holy presence of God. God showed up how He did so that His people would learn to fear Him and keep from sinning. Similarly, our fear of God should result in our obedience and faith in Him; He loves us and wants the best for us. We need to remember exactly who it is we are giving our lives to, and give Him the fear that He deserves.
