A Faithful Response — Scripture Reflection #017
Luke 1:38 (New Living Translation)
38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
If there were a list for the best responses to God’s calling in the Bible, Mary would be at the top of the list for Best Answer. Her faith and submission to God shine brightly when given a rather confusing message from the angel Gabriel regarding her future. Instead of responding with doubt or disbelief, as we often see in similar situations (Zechariah — Luke 1:18; Sarah — Genesis 18:11-12), Mary accepts the angel’s words and believes that God’s will will be done; she gives a faithful response. Elizabeth, Mary’s relative, celebrated her, saying, “You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what He said” (Luke 1:45 NLT). When God gives us an assignment, let our response be just like Mary’s!
