Confident Belief — Scripture Reflection #071

Genesis 15:5-6 (New Living Translation)

5 Then the LORD took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”
6 And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.

The response in these verses right here is what God desires of every one of us. He is looking for great faith (or even as small as a mustard seed) to claim the great promises and blessings He has over our lives. God, being a good father, wants the best for us–He wants to give us good gifts. However, in order for us to accept this, we must respond with confident belief, just as Abram did.

Close-up of the dictionary definition of "Believe" in bold, surrounded by a soft spotlight. The text conveys themes of faith and confidence. This represents how we must have confident belief in God to receive what He has in store for us.

We see a similar type of belief and trust when an angel of God came to Mary and told her that she would give birth to the Savior of the world, Jesus. Mary responded with, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true” (Luke 1:38). Mary was surely blessed because of her faith in God. This is directly contrary to Zechariah, her relative Elizabeth’s husband, who responded to a similar confrontation with disbelief, saying, “How can I be sure this will happen?”

The Point: God is looking for you and me to listen to Him and respond with confident belief. Then we can receive the good things He has in store for us.
