Maturity — Scripture Reflection #039
1 Corinthians 6:12 (New Living Translation)
12 You say, “I am allowed to do anything” — but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.
In today’s scripture, Paul is warning the Corinthian church to avoid situations that could lead them to fall into sin. When we live by the power of the Holy Spirit, the fruit of self-control grows within us. Having self-control allows us to say “no” in the face of temptation. Being mature means that we avoid tempting situations that would compromise our obedience to God altogether. Like the Corinthians, we must heed Paul’s advice by exercising maturity and steering clear of any situation that might cause us to sin against God.
The Prayer: Father, thank You for being my strong tower to whom I can run when I am weak. Please lead me not into temptation today, but deliver me from the evil one. I pray that I will honor You with my thoughts and decisions each day. Please grow maturity within me as I follow You. I love You and thank You. Amen.
