No one but Jesus — Scripture Reflection #060

Revelation 5:2-5 (New Living Translation)

2 And I saw a strong angel, who shouted with a loud voice: “Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll and read it.
4 Then I began to weep bitterly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll and read it. 5 But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

As the time of the final revelation approaches, God, seated on His throne, will bring forth a scroll sealed seven times. This scroll holds judgment over the earth and the revelation of God’s mysterious plan for His everlasting reign. Who will be found worthy to break the seals on the scroll and open it? Not one will be found on earth, under the earth, or even in heaven. Not one but Jesus, the lamb of God, will be found worthy.

Jesus, the lion of Judah, lived a sinless, flawless life in the eyes of God the Judge, and took the sins of everyone upon himself that we may have hope for redemption and salvation. He died for our sins and purchased our salvation with His blood. No one but Jesus is worthy to open that scroll that brings judgment upon the earth and reveals the plan for His eternal reign.

The Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for the life You lived. Thank You for leaving Your spot in heaven and choosing to suffer a mortal life so that I may have hope for salvation. Thank You for dying for me, and then conquering the grave. Because of this, I have hope! No one but You, Jesus, is worthy to open that scroll. No one but You can save me from the death that I deserve. Thank You for mediating with God on my behalf. I love You, Jesus. Amen.
