Set Apart — Scripture Reflection #092

Leviticus 8:30 (New Living Translation)

30 Next Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar, and he sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. In this way, he made Aaron and his sons and their garments holy.

The hot, beating sun. The smell of blood. The cries of livestock. The ashes on the wind. The offerings to the LORD during the time of the Old Testament were no joke. Oftentimes, the priests of Israel would spend long, grueling days slaughtering, carving, and presenting offerings to the LORD to make the people of Israel right with God or to show their praise and appreciation of Him. This arduous process also served to set apart the people of Israel from the other peoples of the world and allowed them to have fellowship with a holy and awesome God.

Sketch depicting the process of giving offerings to the God of Israel. Shows a man dressed in priestly robes burning an offering on an altar; two men preparing another offering; and more men washing their hands in a basin. The setting is the Biblical Tabernacle described in the Old Testament. This represents how the instructions and directions God gave the people of Israel was in part, meant to have them be set apart from the other peoples of the world.

Thankfully, today, we do not need to sacrifice animals or sprinkle blood upon ourselves to be made right with God. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, took the place of the animals and was sacrificed for us so that we could be made right with God and have a relationship with Him. 1 Peter 1:2 says, “God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed Him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ…” Because of Jesus, we are free to come to God with all our cares and worries. We know that He hears us and will cause everything to work together for our good as we love and obey Him. Let the reality of this truth sink in, and give God the praise that is due to Him.

The Prayer: Thank You, LORD, for wanting to have a relationship with me. Jesus, be praised for Your sacrifice. Because of You, I am free to come before God at any time. I am set apart for You. Thank You for everything. Amen.
