What do you do on Holy Ground? — Scripture Reflection #080
Exodus 3:3-6 (New Living Translation)
3 “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.”
4 When the LORD saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
“Here I am!” Moses replied.
5 “Do not come any closer,” the LORD warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. 6 I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Issac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.
The Question: In what areas of your life can you give God the respect and the fear that He deserves?
If God is really to be Lord over our lives, if He is really to be King of everything, one would think that He would deserve our utmost respect, fear, and devotion. I imagine that if we were teleported to the throne room of God right now, we would immediately find ourselves unworthy to stand before God, let alone be near His presence. Our reaction would likely be similar to that of Isaiah when he saw the Lord (Isaiah 6): “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man.”
Thankfully, we have Jesus who mediates on our behalf, and because of His sacrifice, we can come to the throne of our Gracious God and ask for what we need (Hebrews 4:14-16). However, the point I am trying to make here is that when we come before God, we need to do so with the respect and the fear due to Him. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, our LORD God Almighty. He deserves nothing less than our best. So like Moses, we should “take off our sandals” as we approach God’s throne, and give Him the fear and respect He is due.

Practically speaking, this might look like bowing down before God when we pray; setting aside specific times in our busy days just for Him; removing any distractions that might take our gaze off of Him. I encourage you to think of some ways that you can give God His due today.
